REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA –- Besides the risk of dehydration and jet lag, the hajj pilgrims can also have a risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), known as coach class thrombosis or economy class syndrome. It is caused by long flight by maintaining sitting position.
The number of risk in hajj flights was 1.6 to 1.8 per thousand per year.
In the manual book of Hydration during Hajj by Dr. Imran Agus Nurali, the symptoms of a person who is in pain in hajj flight, are swelling in calf. The asymptomatic thrombosis in the legs can also happen. After that, the hajj pilgrim will feel pain in chest as a symptomatic pulmonary embolism.
Factors that can cause the thrombosis in a long flight are immobilization (sedentary), coach position, dehydration, low air pressure, relative hypoxia, and low humidity. There are also individual factors, such as overweight, hormone therapy, chronic heart disease.
To reduce the risk of dehydration, jet lag and thrombosis, the hajj pilgrims can do these five things, such as do not fly with an empty stomach, do valsava (swallowed), do stretching as often as possible, do the clock rotation according to the destination time, and drink enough to avoid dehydration.
