REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA –- Minister of Health, Nila Djuwita F Moeloek, revealed the causes of the increase in mortality rate of mothers and children. She said that mortality rate of mothers reached 259 per hundred thousand of births.

It caused by maternal nutritional deficiencies that can make children born abnormally. Babies who were abnormally born can be correlated to non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, obesity and others. The costs of the National Health Insurance (JKN) for the diseases reached Rp 3.5 trillion.

"Mothers who lack of nutrients will give birth to a child that isn’t normal. So that the child may obtain non-communicable diseases," said Nila Moeloek in Jakarta, Wednesday (19/8).

Based on the three strata dissertation of Department of Health, children with malnutrition could be normal, vice versa. It depends on the mother’s encouragement.

Nila asked mothers to give a boost of nutrition to newborn baby until the baby is three years old. In the age of two, children’s brain will grow up to 80 percent. While in the age of five, the brain development will increase 100 percent.

Teenage girls should also be prepared in their first period. Family have an important role in maintaining healthy life for teenagers.

"Teenagers need to be reminded to prepare a healthy family from an early age. Their family also have a role in maintaining a healthy life of their children," said Nila.
