REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW DELHI -- Nearly 100 children fell ill on Saturday after consuming sweets distributed by a village head in the eastern Indian state of Bihar's Darbhanga district to celebrate Independence Day, said local media.

Indo-Asian News Service quoted police as saying the incident took place in Ranipur village in Darbhanga, about 200 km from the state capital Patna.

A village chief distributed sweets to local children on the Independence Day. But soon after consuming it, many children fell ill, complaining of uneasiness and starting vomiting, said the report.

After being admitted to hospital, at least 20 children are suffering from critical condition of illness, while the parents and relatives of the children launched a protest and demanded action against the village head, said the report.

Food poisoning of children takes place occasionally in India.

In July 2013, at least 23 school children died at a primary school in Saran district of Bihar after eating a meal contaminated with pesticide.
