REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government has set up a Task Force to Handle Issues Related to Women and Children (PPA) to curb violence against them.

"The frequent problems being faced by women and children prompted the women's empowerment and child protection ministry to set up the PPA Task Force," Wahyu Hartomo, secretary of the ministry, said here on Tuesday.

The task force will focus on preventive and curative efforts, he pointed out, adding that it will reach out to affected women and children.

The task force will also identify the issues and come up recommendations about the kind of conditions that must be created for women and children to feel safe, and the services that must be made available to them.

If necessary, it will evacuate them to the Integrated Service Center for Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A).

The task force could also encourage law enforcement forces to impose tougher punishments on those who harm women and children.

Violence against women and children does not only have an immediate negative impact on the victims but can have consequences that may leave them tormented for the rest of their lives.
