REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) here on Thursday is scheduled to receive the organizing committee of Equator Carnival to be organized to mark the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence.
The head of state will be accompanied by the chairman of the Creative Economic Agency during the meeting at the Merdeka Palace.
The carnival will be held in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, on August 22, 2015.
Hundreds of decorated boats and cars will be part of the carnival, Numsuan Madsun, the spokesman of the West Kalimantan provincial administration, noted in Pontianak, recently.
The carnival will start from the West Kalimantan Governor's office and conclude at Kapuas Square.
The central government has chosen Pontianak as the first region to host an event to celebrate the country's independence anniversary, outside Jakarta, according to Madsun.
Pontianak has been identified as a potential maritime tourist destination by the National Development Planning Board (Bapennas), he noted.
In the meantime, the president's agenda on Thursday will also include awarding honorary medals to several prominent figures at the State Palace in conjunction with the Independence anniversary celebrations.
Later, Jokowi will chair a meeting with the Final Assessing Team in charge of reviewing and assessing any appointments of high-ranking officials.
In the afternoon, the president will receive a delegation of the US Senate at the Merdeka Palace.
