REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The beef price before 10th July 2015 at retailers were below Rp 100 thousand. The price had been going on from 2014 and did not cause problem in the market.

New problems arise from 10th July 2015, when the government announced that the import license in third quarter were only 50 thousand heads, while in the second quarter the import were 250 thousand heads. This was causing turbulence in cattle import, so that the beef price was rising.

In the feedlot-er (cattle fattening company), the price reached Rp 44 thousand to Rp 46 thousand per kilogram of live cattle. It increased about Rp 8 thousand to Rp 10 thousand from the usual price.

"If the prices rise in the feedlot-er or in the importer, then the prices could be Rp 20 thousand at the slaughterhouses (RPH), and it could be Rp 40 thousand in the market," said the Chairman of the Slaughtering Association, Abud Hadiyanto to ROL, Tuesday (11/8).

It means that the beef that was sold at Rp 90 thousand to Rp 100 thousand per kilogram, now could be sold at Rp 130 thousand to Rp 140 thousand.

"After Eid, the decrease in turnover was almost 30 to 40 percent," he said.

He added that cattle import was only in Jakarta, West Java and Banten. The three provinces were the largest consumers of imported cattle. However, about 20 percent of imported cattle were sent to Lampung, South Sumatra and North Sumatra.

"When the imported cattle were disturbed, we will look for local cattle. But the local beef will consequently be less and and the national crisis of cattle will happen," said Hadi.
