REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CIBINONG -- Regent of Bogor District, West Java, Nurhayanti hopes President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will reduce the quota for cattle imports to Indonesia in stages.

"I hope the central government will implement its policy of reducing the cattle import quota gradually so that domestic cattle breeders can be prepared for supplying cattle in their territory," Nurhayanti said here on Tuesday.

According to her, Bogor District is only able to supply some 20 percent of the local demand for beef, while the remaining 80 percent is supplied by East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, and Australia.

"The limited quota for beef imports has led to the current shortage of beef in Bogor," she stated.

However, several beef traders in the district's traditional markets have continued to serve customers, even though the price of beef has risen to Rp140 thousand per kilogram.

Under normal circumstances, the price of beef in Bogor District after the Idul Fitri festivities, held recently, should be below Rp120 thousand per kilogram, and the supply should meet the demand.

"The (usual) beef price is Rp120 thousand per kilogram, but the would be beef traders' strike in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi may raise the price and will lead to the scarcity of beef in the market."
