REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel confirmed that the cattle import quota for consumption was not reduced. The next decision of cattle imports were still waiting for an evaluation from Agriculture Ministry related to the domestic availability.
"We reduce the quota, it is not true, only the new license was issued first for 50 thousand cattles, gradually, we will later issue it again after the evaluation," he said at the Trade Ministry's Eid gatherings, on Thursday, July 23.
Gobel certainly did not mention about the next beef imports and only said "in the near future". Principally, he added, the cattle import was done to maintain the stability of the beef price in the market. Hence, the quantity of imports to adjust with demand and supply.
Being asked about the news of the existence of beef processed imports in the domestic market, he claimed did not know. "I want to check first, I don't know," he said.
Previously, Agriculture Ministry to strive for imports of beef feeder alias cattle that has not undergone fattening tightened.
"We know the tightening of feeder cattle imports will be faced with a depopulation risk or cutting productive local female cows, but this is our homework in order to depopulation do not happen," said Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, Muladno.
Agriculture Ministry recorded that feeder cattle imports during January-June 2015 to reach 298.861 tails. The realization was equivalent of 40 percent of the actual feeder cattle imports in 2014. As is known, in 2014 imports realization total of feeder cattle was 729.400 tails from Australia.
