REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- Muhammadiyah provides scholarships to 1,419 students from Thailand which will be divided according to provinces in that country. "There are thousands of muslim students from Thailand who were studied in Muhammadiyah Universities in Java," said the Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Din Syamsuddin, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Wednesday (5/8).
He said the scholarships were awarded to students from four provinces in Thailand, in order to gain knowledge that can be applied in their country. "They come to Indonesia not only to gain knowledge about Islam, but also about agriculture, economy, technology, management and others," Din said.
Even though in Thailand, Buddhism is majority and Islam is minority, the tolerance between the two religions is quite great. Some Thai students also attended the 47th Muhammadiyah Congress in Makassar.
Muhammadiyah also conducted a meeting with International delegates from 18 countries. “Muhammadiyah sent Indonesia students not only to Thailand, but also tp other countries,” he added.
Those countries are the Soviet Socialist Republic of Kazakhstan (Russia), Belgium, Holland, Al Azhar (Cairo), Malaysia, Singapore and the Republic of Mauritius (Africa).
