REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKALONGAN -- Blue swimming crab and crab exports from Indonesia in 2014 amounted to 28,090 tons and was worth US$414.3 million, according to Director General of Aquaculture Slamet Soebjakto.

"The volume of exports of blue swimming crabs produced by farmers in Central Java province reached 1,075 tons. They were worth US$22.3 million," he said here on Wednesday.

According to Soebjakto, the reliance on naturally-caught blue swimming crab and crab resulted in a drop in their population.

"Therefore, we hope people take advantage of this natural resource sustainably. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, through the Directorate General of Aquaculture, seeks to restock to maintain the population of blue swimming crabs," Soebjakto stated.

He further noted that if the catching of blue swimming crab and crab is not followed by seeding in a planned and scheduled manner, their population will fall.

"In a local regulation, Betahwalang village has been informed about the impacts of non-sustainable crab fishing," he affirmed.

He also pointed out that crab production in the village now reached 1.5 tons to 5 tons per day.

According to Soebjakto, the directorate general has prepared seeds of blue swimming crab for households in Betahwalang village so that the community can continuously cultivate and produce the commodity.
