REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The police in ASEAN nations needs an anti-money laundering system to thwart money laundering practices in the region, stated Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

"What steps are we taking in order to reduce crimes, such as corruption and money laundering? I think that ASEAN member countries can share information to curb money laundering activities in the region," he noted in his address during the inauguration of the 35th ASEAN Police Conference at Borobudur Hotel here on Tuesday.

The vice president also urged ASEAN member countries to not permit illegal fund transfers, which not only violate the laws of the country of origin but also those of the destination nation.

"Therefore, we need a good system and cooperation to prevent trans-boundary crimes by adopting a good rule of law among us," he stated.

Kalla expressed hope that following the conference, the police in ASEAN nations would be able to ensure security and economic stability in the region due to the ever-increasing sound trade activities.

He remarked that the ASEAN has good economic conditions and potential, and the police in each of the ASEAN member countries must protect them.

"ASEAN is an advanced trade region and is part of the advanced global economy. The ASEAN countries, with a total population of 600 million, need stability," he emphasized.

He also expressed hope that the senior police leaders of the ASEAN would exchange information and enhance mutual understanding to carry out integrated police duties.
