REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian high school students won three dance competitions organized as part of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, United Kingdom.

A dance coach from Gema Citra Nusantara dance studio, Mira Arismunandar, said in a press release received by Antara here on Tuesday that the Indonesian high school students presented a series of the country's traditional dance forms in England.

"They won the overall dance competition," Arismunandar stated.

The Indonesian dancers won first place in the Choreographed/Styled Traditional Folkdance Competition, second place in the Children's Traditional Folkdance Competition, and third place in the Traditional Folkdance Competition.

They performed a series of dances from various provinces in Indonesia, including Rapa'i Kipah (Aceh), Piring (West Sumatra), Gending Sriwijaya (South Sumatra), Kembang Kipas (Jakarta), Giring Giring (Kalimantan), and Yospan (Papua).

The performances were accompanied by live music of traditional musical instruments such as angklung, talempong, gendang, and rebana.

Angklung is a musical instrument made of two to four bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame, while talempong is a small kettle gong that gives its name to an ensemble of four or five talempong as well as other gongs and drums.

In addition, Gendang is a two-headed drum, while rebana is a Malay tambourine that is used in Islamic devotional music in Southeast Asia.

The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, also known as the Choral Music Festival, assesses the dance and music performances, as well as costumes and culture.

They are accompanied by live music as the use of playback recordings are not permitted, Arismunandar pointed out.

The festival is an international competition in which countries from around the world participate, she added.
