Bangladesh refugees ready to be repatriated by Foreign Affairs Ministry

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi mentioned a number of refugees from Bangladesh ready for expatriation. According to her, the government has completed the verification process for the refugees.

"The last informations that I have, there are about 300 people, the verification process has been completed and are in the stage of preparation for the return," said Retno in the Vice President’s office, Jakarta, on Monday, July 13.

Currently as many as 100 refugees from Bangladesh had been repatriated to their home country. Meanwhile, about 200 refugees who have passed the verification stage were still awaiting the return process.

"If I’m not wrong, from the 300 people, at least around 100 people already returned, and the verification has been done on around 200 people. So, it just the deportation process," she added.

The repatriation of refugees to Bangladesh, she added, was also facilitated by agencies the International Organization for Migration (IOM). As for the verification process was carried out by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Earlier, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has twice mentions repatriate some refugees of Bangladesh who were in Aceh. The total number of refugees who have been repatriated by the Indonesian government recorded around 77 people.

Based on data from the UNHCR, as many as 1,794 Rohingya refugees and Bangladesh were in Aceh. About 700 of them were citizens of Bangladesh, while the rest were citizens of Myanmar.
