Court sentences Nigerian drug trafficker to life in prison

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- The district court of Depok city in West Java sentenced Nigerian citizen Uzoma Elele Alfa (33) to life imprisonment here on Monday for smuggling 4 kilograms of methamphetamine and 301.1 grams of marijuana.

"The defendant is declared guilty and sentenced to life in prison," Chief Judge Hariono said, reading out the verdict.

After discussing the verdict with his lawyer, Alfar accepted the sentence.

"We accept the sentence," he said through his interpreter.

However, the prosecutor's office of Depok had demanded a death sentence for Alfar.

One of the public prosecutors, Edy Azis, stated that he will coordinate with his superior before deciding on whether to appeal against the ruling.

"We have seven days to think about accepting or appealing against it," he added.

Alfar was caught by a team of immigration and BNN (National Anti-Narcotics Agency) officers in Depok on September 16, 2014.

They had confiscated thousand grams of crystal methamphetamine and marijuana found hidden in a CCTV unit and a baby carriage.
