REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Public minibuses operator Kopaja has agreed to be integrated with the city-owned bus operator PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) in a revitalization program of public transportation in Jakarta.

"Kopaja has agreed to the offer of the Jakarta Administration. It will cooperate with PT Transjakarta on an agreed rate per kilometer," Head of Kopaja Nanang Basuki said in Jakarta's City Hall here on Wednesday.

The city, therefore, will require Kopaja buses to be revitalized such as being equipped with air conditioners, automatic doors and higher deck.

"Moreover, joining the Transjakarta, all Kopaja bus drivers should be certified, to meet the Transjakarta's requirement. Thus, the drivers will gain benefit of two-fold the provincial minimum wage," he said.

However, the bus operator and the administration will be working on how much rate paid per kilometer for the agreement.

The Kopaja operator will revitalize around 200-300 of its armada in the next two months.

"We have so far 120 units of Kopaja buses that meet the operational standard," he said.

Transjakarta is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, which began operations in 2004, in Jakarta.

The Transjakarta was designed to provide Jakarta citizens with a reliable public transportation system to help reduce rush hour traffic.

It was expected to lure the middle classes to switch to public transportation and leave their private vehicles at park-and-ride facilities located near certain bus shelters.

"With Kopaja joining Transjakarta, I hope public transportation in Jakarta would be more orderly and traffic congestion would be reduced," Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaya Purnama said.
