REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Any regional head who wants to resign ahead of the simultaneous elections in December 2015 must receive a seal of approval from the local legislative council, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo stated.
"Regional heads cannot just resign whenever they decide but should fulfill the required conditions," Kumolo stated during a working meeting with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Tuesday.
He was responding to an allegation that several regional heads are attempting to build a so-called political dynasty through the simultaneous elections scheduled in December 2015.
Based on Law No. 8 of 2015 on Gubernatorial, Regent and Mayoral Elections, no relatives of regional heads or incumbent regional heads are allowed to contest in the elections.
To anticipate the higher number of regional heads resigning ahead of the elections as a result of the ban, the Home Affairs Ministry has issued a regulation necessitating regional heads, who wish to resign, to secure approval from the local legislative council.
"We have stipulated a regulation that regional heads cannot just resign whenever they like without a seal of approval from the local legislative assembly and citing reasons for resigning," he affirmed.
He said the regional heads took an official oath to accomplish their term of office when they were sworn in. However, he questioned the reason behind them resigning before completing their term of office.
