REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- Through the regional Iskandar Muda Military Command, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs, the army will build as many as 56 thousand toilets across Aceh, according to a regional military commander.

"We will build thousands of toilets in Aceh. At least 56 thousand toilets should be built," Major General Agus Kriswanto said here on Monday.

The development of toilets throughout Indonesia needs Rp34 billion in funding. However, their development in Aceh alone needs Rp2 billion.

The construction has yet to commence, pending the readiness of the local governments in Aceh province, he noted.

"These facilities will be developed in every residential house on record. They will each get one toilet and one septic tank. The toilet will not be meant for public use," Kriswanto pointed out.

Moreover, a few district military commands (kodim) in Aceh built 250 toilets at their own cost, he revealed.

The Iskandar Muda Military Command appreciated this initiative, Kriswanto remarked.

In addition, based on a survey conducted by the World Bank, Indonesia loses Rp58 trillion, or Rp268 thousand per person, annually due to poor public sanitation facilities.
