REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno officially opened "Pesantren Ramadan," or short-term Islamic studies at Senior High School (SMAN-2) here on Sunday.
"Pesantren Ramadan is aimed to improve knowledge and understanding of religious values among students to form the behaved personals," the governor stated.
The Islamic studies which commence on June 21 and be completed 10 days before Eid (Idul Fitri festivities) will be supported by 1,150 mentors and cost Rp 2.1 billion.
According to him, the Pesantren Ramadan will also be held in a number of mosques in the West Sumatra provincial capital city of Padang.
"Ramadan is a month of education therefore the program initiated by Padang City Government needs to be appreciated as a means of improving knowledge about Islam," Prayitno said, urging the students to memorize the holy book of Al-Quran as it has many benefits.
Meanwhile, Padang mayor Mahyeldi explained that the lesson material provided for the Pesantren Ramadan in schools is not different from that conducted in the mosques.
