REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- The Northern Sulawesi branch of the national power utility PLN will generate electricity from household garbage this year.

"This year we will develop renewable energy from household garbage processed to produce electricity ," general manager of the PLN branch for North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi and Gorontalo Baringin Nababan said here on Sunday.

Baringin said PLN will cooperate with the academic world to develop electric energy from household garbage.

Apart from producing energy, the program would reduce the problem of disposing of growing volume of garbage in the region, he said.

"Garbage could be used to fuel for power plants as the calorie is almost the same as that of coal, therefore, it is very efficient," he said.

The government has encouraged development of renewable energy to economize on oil.

The country has a massive program to built power plants with a total capacity of 35,000 megawatts in five years to keep pace with the country's fast growing demand for power.
