REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asserted that Indonesia's economy should prioritize productivity, which is supported by the development of the domestic industry.

According to a press statement made available by the Presidential Communication Team to Antara here on Wednesday, President Jokowi had urged to reduce Indonesia's dependence on products from other countries.

"Economic development must be driven by the production sectors, not consumption," the president noted during a limited meeting on infrastructure, maritime, energy, food, and tourism on Tuesday.

President Jokowi also instructed that the projects currently being carried out by ministries/agencies and state enterprises should use local raw materials.

The president has emphasized on improving the quality of national products to ensure a widespread increase in the number of users.

"In order to boost our economic growth, emphasis should be laid on improving the production quality and should be backed by our strong industry, as the added value lies in the production and development of the domestic industry," the president stated.

The head of state noted that besides increasing the production of national products, their quality must also be improved.

"We hope that our economic growth will further improve with even better quality," the president remarked.

Jokowi stated that by ensuring even better quality, the national products can be used in various development projects.

"I have seen that a lot of projects can be implemented by using domestic products, but in practice, they widely use imported products. Consequently, the industry and factories that should have produced 90 to 100 percent, only manufacture 40 to 60 percent of their capacity," Jokowi pointed out.

Therefore, he affirmed that the government will encourage the use of domestic products and improvement in their quality.
