REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The selection committee has invited the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to assist in screening the track records of the candidates applying for the KPK leadership.
In connection with this, the committee met the leadership of the anti-graft agency here on Tuesday.
Destry was accompanied by other committee members including spokesperson Betti Alisjahbana, Enny Nurbaningsih, Natalia Subagyo, Meuthia Ganie-Rochman, Yenti Ganarsih, and Supra Wimbarti.
The committee had also met the police leadership, and after meeting with the KPK leadership, they planned to also meet the leadership of the Financial Transactions Analysis and Reporting Center (PPATK).
"One thing we need to emphasize is that the tasks of the KPK leadership in the future would be abundant not only to enforce the law but also to conduct supervision coordination with other law enforcers. Coordination must be improved because the KPK cannot fight corruption on its own," she said.
Meanwhile, Betti stated that the committee had already received several ideas on the ways in which the KPK leadership can conduct their duties peacefully and effectively.
"A lot of ideas have indeed been received regarding how the KPK leadership could carry out their tasks well with peace of mind and effectively. We are however aware that the main task of the committee is selecting candidates. So, the inputs we received would be discussed with the president. Our focus remains on choosing and identifying and later selecting the appropriate candidates for the KPK leadership," she affirmed.
She stated that the committee will carefully scrutinize the track records of the candidates to prevent the next KPK leadership from facing possible legal problems in the future.
"We will check them in detail not only in cooperation with the police and the KPK but also with other agencies such as the PPATK and the National Intelligence Agency with regard to minimizing mistakes in determining their track records. Many have given inputs with regard to preventing minor problems from arising that can hinder the functioning of the future KPK leadership," she noted.
Based on talks with the police on Monday, Betti remarked that the police had agreed to implement a regulation regarding the statute of limitations especially on minor cases, so that the KPK leadership would not drop out while in office.
"The selection committee however has no authority over the issue, as we are appointed by the president, and so, we will convey it to the candidates and the people to decide," she said.
With regard to the visit, KPK Acting Chief Taufiqurrahman Ruki stated that the KPK had submitted 17 competencies to be taken into consideration while selecting the candidates.
"Theoretically, the results of the study by the research and development division regarding the 17 competencies needed for selecting the KPK leadership in collegial term has been submitted to the selection committee," he noted.
Ruki stated that the KPK will offer complete assistance to the committee, including evaluating the track records of the candidates with the hopes that it would not make wrong decisions in the selection process before the names are submitted to the House of Representatives for a fit and proper test.
Registration for the KPK leadership has begun on June 5, and it will be open until June 24.
The applicants are required to write an essay of up to 10 pages regarding the prevention and eradication of corruption as well as their vision, mission, and innovative ideas.
Administrative selection is scheduled to be conducted from June 27 to July 26.
On July 27-28, the committee will conduct an assessment and announce the shortlisted candidates on August 10.
The committee is scheduled to submit the names of the selected candidates to the president on August 31, 2015. The president will then select eight of them for submission to the House of Representatives for a fit and proper test.
The present KPK leadership's term of office ends on December 16, 2015. Meanwhile, Busyro Muqqodas and Roby Arya Brata are the two candidates who have already been selected.
