REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia and the United States are cooperating in the field of air transportation to increase the services offered to the people, Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan stated.

"The cooperation, which has been established since April 20, 2015, aims to set up a forum to enhance communication between the aviation industries of the two countries," Minister Jonan remarked during a meeting of the Indonesia-US Aviation Working Group here on Tuesday.

The cooperation encompasses modernization of air navigation, aviation safety and security, and the development and growth of aviation services, he explained.

Other sectors covered in the cooperation include development planning, air corridor and airport capacity, integration and public aviation access, and cargo security.

"If I am asked to choose between safety and flight capacity, I would prefer to choose safety because safety is a must," he emphasized.

With regard to the implementation of the cooperation, the directorate general of air transportation and the US Embassy in Jakarta organized a working group meeting on Tuesday to discuss issues related to air transportation and was attended by 15 aviation industries from the United States.

US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O. Blake stated that airline industries are growing rapidly marked by the increase in passengers at airports in big cities such as Jakarta, Bali, and Medan.

He remarked that the aviation industries in Indonesia grew significantly in 2013 when they transported some 30 million passengers.
