5.0-magnitute quake hits West Halmahera

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDAR LAMPUNG -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit West Halmahera in North Maluku province on Wednesday morning, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 07.01 a.m. western Indonesian time was located at 1.91 degrees northern latitude and 126.42 degrees eastern longitude or 139 km northwest of West Halmahera at a depth of 10 km, head of the Kotabumi Geophysics Station in Lampung Province Yuharman said quoting a BMKG report.

The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, the agency said.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale is considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "ring of fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
