REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- Drug abuses caued a loss of around Rp63.1 trillion in the past year in Maluku, the anti drug agency has said.
"The figure is quite fantastic. The economic losses caused by drug abuses even exceeded the development budget for the province," Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) for Maluku Benny Pattiasina said.
The drug caused losses in Maluku has increased sharply in the past three years, Benny said here on Tuesday.
Based on survey by the Health Research Center of the University of Indonesia in 2012, the economic losses were recorded at Rp554,834,274,547, up to Rp617,105,153,972 in 2013, and to Rp63.1 trillion in 2014.
"The damage caused by drug abuses is extensive from social,, economic and cultural losses and other damages. You can imagine how much money the addicts spent only drugs," Benny said.
The main types of drug consumed by users in Maluku is marijuana followed by methamphetamine and Amphetamine Type Stimulant (ATS), he said.
