REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The police will not hesitate to take action against a police member (PN) allegedly involved in extorting bribes from a drug lord in Bandung, West Java, Police Chief Investigator Commissioner General Budi Waseso stated.

"We are consistent in handling this case. If one of our members has committed a violation, we will punish him. We want the police to be clean," Head of the National Police Headquarters' Crimes Investigation Department (Bareskrim) Budi Waseso affirmed here on Wednesday (6/5).

Commissioner General Waseso remarked that the National Police Headquarters' Security and Profession Division (Divpropam) is now investigating PN.

"PN is now being questioned by the Divpropam. I will handle its criminal aspect," he noted.

PN, a police adjunct senior commissioner, is a member of the Narcotics Crime Directorate of the National Police's (Polri's) Bareskrim.

He is suspected to have taken a bribe worth Rp3 billion from a drug lord when conducting duty.

The case began when PN and his subordinates were trying to arrest a drug baron and confiscate evidence at a discotheque in Bandung, West Java.

The drug lord tried to bribe PN to stop further proceedings in the case and promised to provide PN with a bribe of Rp5 billion in stages. In the first stage, PN received Rp3 billion.

However, when the drug dealer was about to hand over the remaining Rp2 billion, he adversely reported the case as he was upset since PN had not stopped investigations into the case despite having received the initial bribe amount.

Thereafter, the Internal Security Force members of the Polri's Headquarters arrested PN.

Waseso said his side was still investigating the alleged bribe amounting to Rp3 billion that PN had received.

"It can just happen in the field. We still do not know who was asking (for the bribe) and who was offering. We will see to it later," Waseso added.
