REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Friday (1/5) appreciated peaceful May Day, or International Labor Day, celebrations across Indonesia.
"The celebration of May 1 is the real celebration because there are no sweeping efforts or closing of roads involved. All participants celebrated and cheered general speeches," Kalla said here on Friday.
The VP was speaking during his visit to the Police Headquarters to watch a video teleconference on Labor Day security efforts in Indonesia.
Kalla appreciated police officers for securing celebrations on International Labor Day.
"I am grateful to the Indonesian Police Chief as well as to the members of all labor organizations for peacefully celebrating May 1," Kalla stated.
The Vice President had earlier appealed to laborers to hold their large-scale demonstrations for commemorating International Labor Day on Friday in a peaceful way.
Kalla had asked them to hold protest rallies in an orderly manner, without damaging public facilities.
"They can hold protest rallies, but without violating the law or occupying entire roads or damaging facilities and disturbing others," Kalla had remarked.
Kalla pointed out that his government guarantees wider employment opportunities for the people.
The government also wants to increase the welfare of laborers and create more jobs for the people.
"Of course, we want to improve laborers' welfare with fair wages and better education, health, and housing facilities," the vice president explained," he said.
Meanwhile, Police Chief Badrodin Haiti noted that peaceful protest rallies on International Labor Day were held in 170 areas across Indonesia and participated by 352 thousand people.
