KPK leaders want Novel's detention suspended

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Acting official of Vice Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Johan Budi SP said that KPK leaders will pledge themselves to give surety for Novel Baswedan. Novel Baswedan was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Police on Friday (1/5) early this morning.

"Related with that, earlier we decided KPK leaders will pledge themselves, all five, if later Novel Baswedan will be arrested by the Criminal Investigation," Johan Budi said in his press conference at the Commission, Friday (1/5).

According to him, Novel should not be held on detention. Therefore, the KPK leaders also believed Novel would not run away or eliminate the evidence of the case that occurred several years ago. KPK leaders also believed Novel will not repeat similar action.

"The letter was signed representing five," he said.

Novel arrested by police officers from Polda Metro Jaya and Criminal Investigation. The arrest carried out at his home on Friday (1/5) morning. Novel arrested with arrest warrant No. SP.KA /19/IV/2015/Dittipidum dated April 24, 2015 signed by the Director of General Crime, Brigadier General Herry Prastowo.

Around 12:20 pm, Novel was taken to the Criminal Investigation Office escorted by three plainclothes police officers. Novel's legal counsel arrived in the Criminal Investigation at 2:40 to meet with Novel. However, Novel's legal counsel, Bahrain, was not allowed to meet Novel.

Previously, Novel was made as a suspect in a case of alleged perpetrators for shooting of bird's nest theft when he was Chief of criminal detective unit on Bengkulu Police Resort in 2004. His case was delayed after 2012 at the request of the former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. However, the case was re-investigated by Police in Bengkulu.
