REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government decided to postpone the execution on death prisoner from the Philippines, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) reasoned, it was done to appreciate the ongoing legal process in the Philippines.

Jokowi admitted that he had received a letter from the Government of the Philippines mentioning that recruiter of Mary Jane, Maria Kristina Sergio, had surrendered to the local police. Therefore, the presence of Mary Jane needed as a witness in the case.

"We respect the legal process as it is. But it is not canceled, it's a delay," said Jokowi at Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta, Wednesday (29/4).

Mary Jane was supposedly executed early this morning in Nusakambangan jail. However, a woman from the Philippines who allegedly victim of human trafficking was saved from the death penalty just seconds before the execution.

Therefore, the Indonesian government decided to postpone the implementation of the death penalty in the Philippines in order to give a chance to resolve the legal case involving the Mary Jane. Mary Jane was arrested by Indonesian police in 2010.

The 31-year-old woman was caught with 2.6 kilograms of heroin when she came to Indonesia through Adi Sucipto Airport on Yogyakarta. However, Mary Jane insisted that she was framed for drug smuggling.
