REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SERANG -- Banten Police Chief Brigadier General Boy Rafli Amar warned to safeguard the public against the dangers and negative influence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) propaganda through the internet and social media.

"Internet-based propaganda is the global trend that cannot be avoided. The most important thing is how to enable our people to select the information correctly and smartly," he stated here on Monday.

Speaking to journalists after attending a declaration on the anti-ISIS campaign here, Amar affirmed that some small groups of people in Banten Province have attempted to influence the public, through social media, to join the terrorist group.

"I cannot yet reveal who the recruiters are and how many people have joined ISIS at the moment. The people know more about it because it is closely related to family matters," he noted at the event organized by the Banten People's Anti-ISIS Front (F MBAI).

Meanwhile, the F MBAI Coordinator Embay Mulya Syarif said that the declaration, participated by various elements in the society such as the youth and students, was a preventive effort to safeguard the people from the ISIS' propaganda and recruitment.

"I declare that ISIS does not follow Islam because Prophet Muhammad does not teach us to do acts of violence and murder. The people of Banten must stay alert and comprehend the teachings of Islam correctly as guided by the holy Qur'an and Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad," he emphasized.

Therefore, the people of Banten should denounce the ISIS and all forms of radical movements and called on the clerics to defend Muslims by providing them with good education and the teachings of true Islam, he stated.

The ISIS militants have been fighting against the government troops in Iraq, Syria, and Libya. In several cases, ISIS fighters frequently meted out cruel and inhuman punishments on those they regarded as enemies, including burning to death a Jordanian pilot.
