REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia has made significant progress in the education sector, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

"Indonesia has made great progress in increasing the participation of its people in all levels of education, starting from pre-school education and elementary education to secondary education," Secretary General of OECD Angel Gurria said after the launch of a study on a national education policy here on Wednesday.

In addition, the country has also succeeded in improving teachers' skills, in certifying teachers, and in improving university admission standards for aspiring teachers, she noted.

"Indonesia is the main economic strength of Southeast Asia, and the government of the Republic of Indonesia has set a goal for social and economic development, in which human resource development plays a key role," Gurria pointed out.

Regardless of the widening gap among regions with restricted access to quality education, Indonesia has made tremendous progress in all fields in the education sector, she affirmed.

The study recommends efforts to give priority to pre-school education, particularly for the poor, increase the public's participation in learning processes at the elementary education level, manage diversity, and improve efficiency, among others.

It also recommends strong coordination to involve industries in the vocational and technical education system, increase the quality of education, use diversity in line with priorities of national development, and improve training and education for adults.

Moreover, Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan stated that the study reflected traits of international educational practices.
