REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALANGKARAYA -- Central Kalimantan Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) member Budi Susilo has appealed to the Department of Education and Culture to implement subject matter on drugs at schools.

Budi expressed hope here on Monday that the Department of Education and Culture can incorporate Abuse, Prevention, Eradication and Illicit Drugs Circulation (P4GN) in the education curriculum implemented in schools.

"We hope the Department of Education and Culture and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) can immediately conduct a study to realize the application of the P4GN in the education curriculum," he noted.

Budi opined that imparting education to students on the ill-effects of drug abuse will assist them to make healthy and safe choices, identify risky situations, and develop strategies to prepare them for challenging situations.

He emphasized that educating students on the ill-effects of drug abuse is extremely important as a school is an institution where children can obtain information about the dangers of drug abuse that they might not receive at home.

"Schools are viewed as the primary places where the children can be imparted education on the ill-effects of drug abuse and to protect them from the dangers. To save the younger generation from drug abuse, we can start by creating a school environment that is clean of drugs," he remarked.

Budi called on the local government to support imparting education on drug abuse at schools and to make Palangkaraya a drug-free city on the island of Kalimantan.

He explained that in order to implement drug education at schools, the teachers should be equipped with an understanding about the subject matter to be taught to students.

"The teachers should position drug education within a broader health and personal learning curriculum that focuses, among other things, on mental health issues such as stress and coping," he noted.
