REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Governor of West Java Ahmad Heryawan (Aher) said that agates must be standardized to thwart sellers from cheating by selling fake stones.

"We should handle the widespread 'fever' of agate stones. People should be careful because there have been fraudulent acts involving the sale of fake agates," the governor stated here on Saturday.

He added that there was the possibility that new agate lovers could not distinguish genuine agate stones from the fake ones.

"This is because there is no standardization or certification given to genuine agate stones," Aher pointed out.

The governor believes that providing certificates would benefit traders as it would lead to a hike in the prices of the precious stones.

"I think it would be better to give certificates guaranteeing authenticity," the governor remarked.

Aher further noted that West Java had great reserves of agate stones, including the five-color stones found in Garut district and the lavender stones found in Sukabumi district.
