REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) of Yogyakarta has prepared a study on European-style buildings to formulate guidelines for future constructions.
"We will try to map European-style buildings and their derivatives in Yogyakarta," Head of the Regional Development Planning Board of Yogyakarta Edy Muhammad said here on Tuesday.
According to him, emulating European architectural style has affected the growth of Yogyakarta.
Based on the study, the board will lay a set of rules that can be a reference source for those who will construct new buildings in the future.
"New buildings need not follow the architectural style of Europe and they can highlight old buildings," he remarked.
According to him, Bank Indonesia's complex on Senopati Road, Yogyakarta, stands out for its blend of both European architectural style and new designs.
"While it does not look exceptionally old or strikingly new, it looks remarkably harmonious," he stated.
There are many European architectural buildings in Kotabaru. Some buildings have classical architecture and art deco.
The study will also support the development of a tourist village in Yogyakarta, including craft, art, and cuisine.
The board will not limit the study's findings to preserve the city's cultural heritage, the Division Head of the Research and Development of Bappeda, Teguh Setiawan, emphasized.
The assessment will include an inventory of buildings, architectural styles, year of construction, and functions of the current buildings.
The assessment will take three to four months.
