REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SOLO -- President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has proposed six National Police chief candidates to replace Comsr. Gen. Budi Gunawan who has been named a suspect in a graft case.
"There are six (candidates) proposed by Kompolnas," he said after opening the second national congress of the People's Conscience (Hanura) Party here on Friday.
But the President said he had yet to officially receive the names of the candidates.
Jokowi said he learned the names through the media.
"The names have not submitted to me. I only read them in the newspaper," he said.
The President invited Kompolnas to the State Palace a few days ago to submit National Police chief candidates.
However, Kompolnas failed to meet the President. The commission only met with Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjojanto.
The President said earlier he would decide National Police chief candidates as soon as possible.
"As soon as possible. Let's wait and see," he said.
President Jokowi has decided to postpone the induction of Budi after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named him a suspect in a corruption case.
Budi has been named a suspect for his alleged involvement in suspicious transactions when he was heading the career development division at the National Police Headquarters from 2003 to 2006 and handling other positions.
Following his naming as a suspect, the police named KPK Deputy Chairman Bambang Widjajanto suspect in a regional election dispute case for allegedly asking a witness to give a false testimony in a court in 2010, when he was a lawyer.
Amid the ongoing KPK versus police conflict and the dilemma of whether or not to install Budi, President Jokowi has set up a nine-member Independent Consultative Team to help find solutions to the problems.
The team comprising, among others, former chairman of Muhammadiyah Syafii Maarif and former chairman of Constitutional Court (MK) Jimly Asshidiqie, has advised the head of state to drop the nomination of BG and select a new candidate.
