REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  JAKARTA -- The mass rapid transit (MRT) project has entered the new stage of the construction of kingpost columns.

"The construction of kingpost columns for MRT stations is a follow up to that of a D-wall, or diaphragm wall," President Director of PT MRT Jakarta Dono Boestami said here on Wednesday.

A kingpost is a temporary structure needed to sustain the surface layer of the soil during top-down excavation, he explained.

"A kingpost will endure the vertical burden when the structure of the column is being built," he stated.

Boestami further noted that the construction of kingpost columns at the HI traffic circle was being done in parallel with the completion of the construction of a D-wall for the mechanical and electrical corridor.

Also, the building of a D-wall for the station box has been completed.

Moreover, Boestami pointed out that the kingpost columns built along the MRT's corridor (Senayan, Setiabudi, Bendungan Hilir and Dukuh Atas) in January did not have a significant impact on traffic management in these areas.

"However, the construction of kingpost columns at the HI traffic circle will significantly affect the traffic management. The application of traffic rearrangement should be conducted keeping the limited area in mind," he affirmed.

He also observed that the application of traffic rearrangement was necessary to minimize the impact on motorists and local residents.

The construction of a D-wall on the east side (the mechanical and electrical corridor) and that of kingpost columns along the south side will be carried out from February 11 to April 20, 2015.
