Pretrial hearing against anti-graft body adjourned until Tuesday

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The pretrial hearing petition filed by Commissioner General Budi Gunawan against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) at the South Jakarta District Court here Monday has been adjourned until Tuesday.

"We will continue on Tuesday to hear witnesses and examine evidences," said Judge Sarpin Rizaldi who chaired the pretrial process.

According to Rizaldi, the pretrial hearing will be continued to examine legal evidences presented by both Budi Gunawan and KPK camps.

Budi Gunawan's team of lawyers, he noted, will be allowed to present their witnesses, expert witnesses, and evidences to support their legal arguments during the hearing on Tuesday and Wednesday, while KPK will get the opportunity to present their side on Thursday and Friday.

The KPK-Police conflict surfaced after the anti-graft body named Budi Gunawan, the sole candidate for police chief, suspect in a corruption case on January 13, 2015.

The KPK investigators accused Budi Gunawan of receiving bribes through suspicious transactions when he headed the Police Headquarters' Career Planning Bureau during 2003-2006 and held other posts in police.

Soon, several sections in the society reported to police about various alleged wrongdoings by four KPK commissioners, including Bambang Widjojanto.

However, the only KPK commissioner that police has so far named suspect is Bambang Widjojanto.

Responding to the ongoing conflict, President Joko Widodo recently stated he would solve all the issues caused by the cancellation of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan's inauguration as police chief.
