REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo has hinted that he will not install Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, who was named as a suspect in a corruption case, as the Indonesian police chief, a state administrative law expert said.
"The presidential decree that President Joko Widodo issued on January 16 regarding Budi Gunawan's dismissal possibly insinuates this," Refly Harun, the expert, told journalists here on Thursday.
According to Harun, President Joko Widodo played what is known as "Politics of Java," which is characterized by an indirect method of notifying or deciding on something. This includes awaiting the court's final decision on the trial process of the case involving Gunawan.
Gunawan, whom the anti-graft body named as a suspect in a case of corruption, should be able to catch the message and withdraw from the polemic on his nomination for the post of the police chief, he remarked.
On Wednesday, President Joko Widodo had revealed that next week, he would resolve the issues that arose due to the postponement of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan's inauguration as the police chief.
The ongoing tensions between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the police surfaced after the anti-graft body named Gunawan, the sole candidate for the post of the Indonesian police chief, a suspect in a corruption case on January 13.
Investigators of the KPK accused Gunawan of receiving bribes through a suspicious transaction when he headed the Police Headquarters' Career Planning Bureau during the 2003-2006 period and also when he held other posts in the police force.
Amid the conflict, certain elements in the society filed reports about the alleged wrongdoings of four KPK commissioners, including Bambang Widjojanto, to the police.
However, the only KPK commissioner who has, so far, been named a suspect by the police is Widjojanto.
Furthermore, Syafi'i Ma'arif, chairman of the nine-member team set up by the head of state to find facts that could help resolve the conflict between the KPK and the police, had recommended earlier that the president should not induct Budi Gunawan.
