REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono believed President Joko Widodo will solve the conflict between the National Police and Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
"I think this matter is not complicated and the solution is already there. I believe President Jokowi will be able to solve this," Yudhoyono stated on his official twitter account, @SBYudhoyono, on Wednesday.
The former President posted nine tweets. In one of the tweets, he said many people have asked him to help solve the KPK-Police polemics. However, he has restrained himself so as to avoid worsening the situation.
"Despite many people asking me, I would rather not see Pak Jokowi. It could give an impression that I try to intervene in this case," Yudhoyono stated.
The former President also highlighted various arguments that both parties raised against each other. "Now the situation has become worse; one can attack another in the media and people will never know whether the statements are true or false," Yudhoyono tweeted.
Yudhoyono called on all parties concerned to clarify their arguments so as to maintain people's trust.
"Remember leaders, government officials, law enforcement officials, and political parties need people's trust. Hence, everybody needs to clarify their arguments in the media. Tell the truth," Yudhoyono concluded in his tweet.
A conflict erupted between KPK and the National Police after the anti-graft body named Budi Gunawan a suspect on January 13, just one day after President Jokowi nominated him as the sole police chief candidate.
The House of Representatives (DPR) accepted the nomination of Budi Gunawan, despite his status as a corruption suspect.
The President, however, did not immediately make a decision on Budi's installation, although the DPR had unanimously approved his nomination.
The National Police's Crime Investigation Department Chief Budi Waseso later named Bambang Widjojanto, a KPK commissioner, suspect in a case.
Most of the four current KPK commissioners, in fact, have been reported to Bareskrim for alleged law violations in different cases.
President Jokowi then set up a nine-member Independent Team to help solve the KPK vs. Police conflict and the controversy surrounding Gunawan's nomination.
The team has advised the head of state to drop the nomination of Gunawan and pick a new candidate. President Jokowi, however, has yet to make an announcement.
