REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is waiting for the right time to take a decision concerning the fate of police chief candidate Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, after receiving inputs and advice from various
President Jokowi was currently making calculations before taking a decision on this matter, Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto told the press here, Tuesday.
The cabinet secretary was ready to draft a regulation to ensure that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) can carry out its functions, if the president orders it, he said.
"According to the existing regulation, the president should issue a government regulation en lieu of the law to make sure that the corruption eradication efforts being carried out by the KPK continue. Concepts of the Perpu are ready. So, we are just waiting for the president to use whichever concept. But, we have prepared every alternative. We just wait for the president, (about) which alternative should be used," he noted.
On Tuesday (Feb. 3), the president held a meeting with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) leaders.
Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu stated that the meeting was just a get-together between the president and TNI leaders.
The TNI is solid in supporting the state and the government, Ryacudu stated.
Over the past week, President Joko Widodo held meetings with several prominent figures including former president B.J. Habibie, retired general Prabowo Subianto, and the nine-member Independent Team to discuss the KPK and Police conflict.
The tensions between the police and the KPK drag on, with another leader of the anti-graft agency facing a legal case.
Earlier, the police already named KPK Deputy Chairman Bambang Wjajanto as a suspect, and under that status, according to the KPK law, he should resign or be dismissed as a KPK leader.
On Tuesday, police investigators hinted that KPK Chairman Abraham Samad would be named a suspect over alleged meetings with leaders of a political party who allegedly persuaded Samad to go easy on the case of a politician facing corruption charges.
"The ones to determine him (Abraham Samad) a suspect are the (police) investigators, but what is certain is that he would be given the status of a suspect," newly appointed Chief of the Police Criminal Detective Body (Bareskrim) Insp. Gen. Budi Waseso pointed out.
The police denied claims that Bareskrim had named the KPK leaders as suspects as a knee-jerk reaction to the naming of police chief candidate Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as a suspect by the KPK just a day after Jokowi announced the appointment of Gunawan as the sole police chief candidate.
