REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Three high school students in Bogor, West Java, have created a water purification device to solve the portable water supply problem, especially for people residing in flood-prone areas.

"We hope this simple device can help the people affected by flooding to meet their need for clean water," one of the students, Fuad, stated here on Monday (26/1).

The device has been created by twelfth grade students: Fuad, Robbi, and Indah. The device comprises a tank, two filtration pipes, and a mixing tank.

According to Indah, the device works in four phases to clean the water. The first phase is coagulation, followed by flocculation to remove the contaminants and pollutants through a chemical process.

The third phase is sedimentation to precipitate the solid materials present in the water, and finally, filtration to separate the water from the pollutants via two pipes.

"The installation can accommodate 50 liters of water and is able to produce 40 liters of clean water within 15 to 20 minutes," Indah explained.

The device was awarded the third place during the National Technology Competition for high school students for sanitation and sustainable clean water supply held by the Environmental Engineering Student Association of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) recently.
