REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  JAKARTA -- Lawmaker hopes that Brazil and Netherlands's move on recalling their ambassadors from Indonesia is only temporary. However, the lawmaker considers that the move is their right.

"I hope it is only a temporary act," Deputy Speaker of Commission I at the House of Representatives Tantowi Yahya said on Tuesday, January 20.

Considering that their move is proper, he asked the two countries to respect Indonesia's decision. Death penalty is a form of law enforcement towards drug convicts in Indonesia. Drugs give a concerning effect to Indonesia. About 40 people died everyday due to drugs.

Death sentence for drug convicts is not imposed only in Indonesia. Other countries, namely China, Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia also apply the sentence.

Yahya expects that the move is not tampering relations between both countries. He asked the government to intensify communication with both Brazil and Netherlands to avoid the matter.

Brazil and the Netherlands recalled their ambassadors from Indonesia on Sunday after Jakarta defied their pleas and executed two of their citizens by firing squad.

A spokesman for Dilma Roussef, the Brazilian president, said she was "distressed and outraged" after Indonesia ignored her last-ditch pleas and put to death Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, who was convicted of smuggling cocaine into Indonesia in 2004.

"Using the death penalty, which is increasingly rejected by the international community, seriously affects relations between our countries," the spokesman said in a statement. The Brazilian ambassador to Jakarta was being recalled for consultations, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile Minister of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands, Bert Koenders, said that the Netherlands had also recalled its ambassador over the execution of Dutchman Ang Kiem Soei.

"My heart goes out to their families, for whom this marks a dramatic end to years of uncertainty," Mr Koenders said. "The Netherlands remains opposed to the death penalty."
