REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AGAM -- Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said the government will not eliminate the social assistance fund program but maintain it because it is still needed by the people.

"The social assistance funds will still be maintained but their distribution will no longer be carried through 17 ministries. The number of distributing agencies will be reduced so that the funds will effectively reach the target," the minister said here over the weekend.

Giving a lecture at the Public Administration Institute (IPDN), the minister said that based on the experience some of the 17 ministries/government agencies had bad mechanism and some others had good one in distributing the assistance.

"We also found that the funds were only distributed to the same recipients each time the funds were channeled and the accountability of the funds was not correct," he said.

Therefore, the government is now collecting information in an effort to distribute funds decided by the home affairs ministry which are really needed by the people.

If all ministries and regional governments distribute the social assistance funds it is feared the funds will not reach all the target and will not be equitable.
