REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- President Joko Widodo while responding to queries related to the nomination of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan for national police chief said he will wait for the process in Parliament.
"Let us wait for the upcoming process in the DPR (House of Representatives), " he said when asked about his police chief candidate during his visit to arms company PT Pindad here on Monday (12/1).
When asked why he decided against involving the Corruption Eradication Commission and the Financial Analysis and Transactions Reporting Center, he simply said, "if I answer this question, I am afraid others the issue will spread to other departments."
The President has stated that the appointment of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan has been done in accordance with proper procedures through the National Police Commission.
"In terms of capability and integrity, we see Budi Gunawan is good and capable. He has also been a recipient of the Adimakayasa star award and has received good education and was the best graduate," Syarifuddin Sudding, a member of DPR's Commission III that will carry out a fit-and-proper test on Budi Gunawan, remarked.
According to him, Budi Gunaman had brought changes to whereever he had been assigned jobs, such as the head of police investigation division, chief of Bali regional police command, as well as police education institute.
"I believe if Budi Gunawan is confirmed as police chief, he will bring a fresh atmosphere to the police force," observed the politician from the Hanura party that supports President Joko Widodo.
President Joko Widodo has officially sent the proposal related to Budi Gunawan's nomination to the DPR. Gunawan will replace police chief General Sutarman whose tenure will end in October this year.
Aziz Syamsuddin, the chairman of Commission III, said that based on his rank and career, Budi Gunawan, who is the current chief of Police Education Institute, has met all the formal requirements needed to be nominated as national police chief.
