REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former Deputy Chief of National Intelligence Agency (BIN), Maroef Sjamsuddin, is appointed as new President Director of Freeport Indonesia. He replaced Rozik B Soetjipto who retired this year.
Sjamsuddin is appointed as Freeport tries to continue its operation in Papua. Freeport's contract ends in 2021. The company tries to extend the contract up to 2041.
However, based on Laws No 4/2014 on Mineral and Coal Mining, contract extension can only be proposed two years before the contract ends. Thus, Freeport can propose contract extension on 2019.
Sjamsuddin expects every stakeholder to support long term investment strategy in Papua. "This is the most interesting time for Freeport to develop new mining in Papua which provides advantages for people and Indonesian government," he said recently.
Sjamsuddin served as Deputy Chief of BIN from 2011 to 2014. He achieved Master of Business Administration from Jakarta Institute Management Studies.
