REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- At least 35 ambassadors and officials from several countries along with 34 international non-governmental organizations are scheduled to attend the 10th Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster Commemoration in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province.

"So far, we have received confirmation from 35 ambassadors and 34 international agencies that they will attend the ten-year commemoration of Aceh tsunami," Chief of Aceh Tourism and Culture Service Muhammad Reza Pahlevi stated here on Tuesday (16/12).

Reza remarked that the committee in charge of organizing the commemoration event will showcase cultural arts and hold some events.

The tsunami that struck the province on December 26, 2014, had claimed at least 200 thousand lives.

The chief affirmed that the day is being commemorated as a mark of gratitude to the volunteers and agencies that assisted the Aceh people through rehabilitation and restorations efforts after the disaster ravaged the capital city.

Four events to be held during the commemoration are a pray event, photography contest, disaster education and international conference on tsunami research, and a disaster expo.

"The purpose of the event is to serve as a reminder to the next generation about the heartbreaking incident. It is necessary that they can understand and make some efforts to minimize the impacts of the disaster," Reza stated.

The event will also help to draw national and international visitors and promote tourism in Aceh.

"We also hope that the ten-year reflection can serve as a promotional gate to show that Aceh is now a safe place and is on the course of development. Thus, travelers can make Aceh their tourism destination," Reza added.
