Cendrawasih Military Command backs police to probe Enarotali clash case

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Chief of the Cendrawasih Regional Military Command Maj. Gen. Fransen Siahaan extended support to the police's efforts to identify the cause of the clash in Enarotali, Papua province, which occurred on Monday.

"We fully support the police's efforts to investigate the case," he said here on Thursday (12/12).

Siahaan added that the regional military command will also send a team of personnel to Enarotali to probe the incident, which left four civilians dead and several military and police personnel injured.

The military team is scheduled to leave for Enarotali on Friday (December 12), he affirmed.

"We hope the result of the investigation can be disclosed transparently," the military chief remarked.

Furthermore, the National Police Headquarters also sent a team of officers to Enarotali to identify the cause of the clash.

Four civilians were killed and six security personnel sustained injuries when hundreds of residents attacked a military post and police office in Enarotali, Paniai district, in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua on Monday.

A spokesman of the Papua provincial police, Snr. Comsr. Sulistyo Pudjo, revealed the same evening that the root cause of the attacks was still unknown.

"According to information from the people, four civilians died, while three soldiers and three policemen were injured. The police still cannot establish the root cause of the attack. However, a communal fight that involved unidentified people took place on Sunday at about 8.00 p. m. local time," Pudjo stated.

Besides attacking the military and police precincts, the mob also set fire to the general election commission office, he pointed out, adding that a number of people and six security personnel sustained injuries after the mob pelted stones at them.

The attacks on Monday happened following a street fight among local residents in Pondok Natal in the Gunung Merah area of Enarotali on Sunday evening, he explained.
