REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- Government will boost the production of sugar by building 10 new sugar factories. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the 10 new sugar factories would be build within the next 4 years.

"Our plan is 100:10. 100 tonnes per hectare with 10 percent of yield," Jusuf Kalla said on Saturday, December 6.

The current sugar factories are old. They inefficiently produce sugar. Kalla believes that the new factories can yield up to 10 percent. As a result, import of sugar will decrease.

Indonesia's total need of sugar reaches 4.5 million tonnes. However, Indonesia can only produce 2.5 million tonnes while the rest is imported. "Our issue is domestic supply," he said.
