Ministry foils illegal trade of Manta rays gills

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fishery has foiled an illegal trade of manta rays gills as one of protected species in Bali provincial sub-district of Pengambengan, according to the KKP minister Susi Pudjiastuti.

"We have foiled the trade of protected species which is a richness of charismatic species as well as a world natural heritage," the miniatry stated in a press release on Sunday.

The statement further said, an action to foil the illegal trade of protected species was aimed at protecting the marine resources and fisheries. The manta rays have been set as the type of fish protected by the state through the decree of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries No. 4/KEPMEN-KP/2014.

"It means that starting 2014, the catch and trade of manta rays and body parts of the fish are prohibited and may subject to legal sanction," Minister Susi Pudjiastuti explained.

In addition, the ministry has been publicizing the minister's decree regarding the protected manta rays at several locations of the catch and trade of manta rays such as in Bali, West Nusa Tengara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Sibolga (North Sumatra), Jakarta, Cilacap (West Java) and East Java.
