REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has urged the government to prioritize the development of marine and fishery commodities in eastern Indonesia.

"No doubt, potential of fishery commodities in eastern Indonesia is abundant. But, the natural resources are yet to be properly managed," the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (Kadin's) Deputy Chairman for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Yugi Prayanto stated on Tuesday.

According to him, the maritime and fisheries industry should be one of the priorities for the economic development of the eastern region.

"Many people have the potential to export fishery products, but their growth has been hampered by the lack of knowledge and experience as well as high logistics costs," he said.

Prayanto remarked that the conditions had not been conducive for the fishermen and businessmen in the fisheries sector.

"The development of fishery commodities in eastern Indonesia has been hindered by the lack of infrastructure. So, the fishermen and entrepreneurs find it difficult for their produce to reach the market," he emphasized.

The fishery centers do not have adequate cold storage facilities. Therefore, he hopes that the central government, especially the local government, can create effective regulations for the development of the maritime and fisheries industry in eastern Indonesia. Prayanto also criticized a number of taxes that burdened businessmen in fishery sector.
