REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya who was former President Director of PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), the largest telecommunication company in the country will work together to promote tourism industries through information technology and telecommunication. Government will improve the quality standards of Indonesian tourism, which is now ranked 70th in the world based on the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI).
"The easiest way is using information and communication technology (ICT). I invite my friends in Telkom to make it faster. We will coordinate with other institutions to develop tourism and its infrastructure," Yahya said recently.
According to Yahya, he will carry out evaluation of the three weaknesses of Indonesian tourism based on Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) of the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely tourism infrastructure, ICT, as well as health and hygiene. It will be the basis for determining the priority in promoting tourism in future.
"We must have priority. Our products are tourism destinations, so we have to determine the top 10 or the top 20 tourism destinations in Indonesia," Yahya added.
In next five years, the new government led by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla targeting more than 20 million foreign tourists in the country compared to 9.5 million tourists in 2014.
